WINTER PARK
Best known for: World-class skiing...Olympians Michelle Roark, Ryan St. Onge and Liz McIntyre all trained at Winter Park Resort.
Most locals know: Winter Park began as two settlements; Hideway Park and Old Town. Located next to the ski area, west of Highway 40, locals continue to call the area Old Town to differentiate it from the downtown Winter Park area.
New, don’t miss activities: The Village at Winter Park (970-726-5514, skiwinterpark.com) offers ice skating with Disco Skate Nights and lessons. Backcountry snowcat skiing is now offered by Grand Adventures (970-726-9247, grandadventures.com).

FRASER
Best known for:
Mountain biking...the Fraser Valley is known as Mountain Bike Capital, USA™.
Most locals know: Dog Sled Rides of Winter Park is actually located in Fraser (970-726-8326).
New, don’t miss activities: Grand Park Community Rec Center (970-726-8968, fraservalleyrec.org) and the Colorado Adventure Park’s tubing hill and snowscoots (mini snowmobiles for kids under 130 lbs.) (970-726-5779, coloradoadventurepark. com).

TABERNASH
Best known for:
Cross-country skiing...check out Devil’s Thumb Ranch and YMCA-Snow Mountain Ranch.
Locals love: The Tabernash Tavern, a lively mountain town atmosphere and amazing, international entrees. Reservations recommended (970-726-4430).

GRANBY
Best known for:
Great family skiing...SolVista Basin’s ski trails all converge at one central location and the bunny hill is the perfect pitch.
Locals hang out: Java Lava, a super hip coffee shop.
New, don’t miss activities: Brickhouse 40 offers Sunday brunch (eating is an activity, right?) and Night Skiing events at SolVista ski area (970-887-3384, solvista.com).

GRAND LAKE
Best known for:
Rocky Mountain National Park...Grand Lake borders the west entrance to 265,769 acres of
wilderness and 60 species of animals.
Locals hang out: The Lariat Saloon, the Grand Lake beach and the Grand Lake Golf Course.
New, don’t miss activities: Walk along the historic western boardwalk and check out new shops and restaurants.

HOT SULPHUR SPRINGS
Best known for: Natural, mineral hot springs...sacred waters where the Ute Indians once bathed and healed.
Most locals know: Hot Sulphur is home to Taste of the Rockies candy shop, offering over 200 varieties of candy.

PARSHALL
Best known for:
Fly-fishing...some public access fly-fishing is still available on the Colorado River.
Most locals know: This is also a great place to view eagles in their natural habitat.
