The New Place to HANG OUT

4/1/2010 Grand Park Source: Mountain Homes and Living
Elementary school kids hugged in the hallways as they prepared to go swimming for the first time in the new natatorium. Parents eagerly enrolled their kids in tumbling and trampoline classes. Swimmers prepared to dive into the new lap pool, while workout junkies took to the new treadmills, barbells and indoor track. Even the teenagers, not interested in exercising, hung out in the lobby talking to one another and playing games. It truly was the place to be—and it continues to be where everyone hangs out, offering as much entertainment socially as recreationally.

Located in The Village at Grand Park, this new community amenity is beautifully designed and well-equipped to appeal to both locals and visiting guests. The natatorium includes a waterslide, spray-and-play area, zero-depth entry pool for tots and a large whirlpool, steam room and cedar sauna. INSIDER TIP: The dry sauna is a great way to dry off and warm up after swimming if you’ve forgotten a towel.

An oversized gym is divided into a gymnastics center and a full-size court for basketball, pickle ball and volleyball. Above the gym is a walking/running track for those cold winter days when it’s too slick to run or walk outside. On the second floor, next to the track, is the cardio/circuit training and free weight area. INSIDER TIP: With new, state-of-art equipment, a trainer is available to help with the operation of the machines and offer tips for more effective workouts.

The climbing wall is one of the main attractions. Set near the entry, it looks as though it has been there all along and the Rec Center was built around it. Kids and beginners can climb the bouldering wall, while serious climbers can tether to a belay system operated by a trained staff member.

Parents will appreciate the Playful Penguins Childcare facility for children age 6 months to 8 years. For only $3-$4 an hour, parents can enjoy the rec center while the kids enjoy some playtime of their own.

Outdoor enthusiasts will love the free groomed trails in the Grand Park meadow behind the rec center for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Park along the meadow behind the Winter Park Market and enjoy a warm soak or steam after your workout. INSIDER TIP: Reward yourself with a healthy smoothie or a cup of high-altitude roasted coffee at the Market.
