Grand Park begins shaping amenities in 100-acre meadow

Grand Park has begun construction of the park amenities in the 100-acre open space meadow along U.S. Highway 40.

The first phase of the “grand park“, the development’s namesake, features the addition of a series of ponds, creeks, newly installed landscaping, and trails. The water features will be surrounded by numerous natural and paved trails that will link the planned neighborhoods of Grand Park to The Village at Grand Park, now under construction.

These additions are also a part of an ongoing water quality plan which began three years ago with the creation of over four acres of constructed wetlands in the meadow. These wetlands act as a natural water treatment system by separating the sediment from the water as it passes through the marsh-like area.

The newly constructed ponds then detain the water for release into the Fraser River. The wetlands, coupled with five new ponds, create acres of additional aquatic habitat for the local wildlife as well as enhancing the beauty of the landscape for Grand Park and the Fraser Valley community.

The creeks and ponds were designed to integrate with the existing irrigation system established by Billy Cozens nearly a century ago as part of his ranching practices. The landscaping along the bike path provides visual interest and wind protection for those utilizing the trail. It is hoped this new landscaping will reduce the snow and ice impact on the trail and the nearby stretch of U.S. Highway 40 as well.

“The goal is to mitigate the impacts of building in Grand Park with well-designed, sustainable facilities that can also enhance the outdoor recreational lifestyle of the area,” said Clark Lipscomb, President of Grand Park. “We embarked on this project with a passion that will be reflected in the place we are creating—a remarkable and enduring place that is soon to emerge,” he added. The improvements are expected to be completed this fall, at which time Grand Park will begin grooming a new trail in the meadow for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
